 Minutes 

Attendance:  Deb Kozlowski,, John Wisniewski, Kate Wisniewski, Terri Smith, Jim Ports, Bonnie Schaffer, Eric Bromwell, Teri Bibeault, Robin Welbourn, Glenn Kraus, Diana Lewis, Diane Gaither, Margie Burgess, Jeanne Biemer, Terri Sierakowski, Kathy Phillips, Brandon Hurn, Barbara Hurn, Allen Zink, Jackie Nelson

 

Welcome

-          Called to order 7:06 pm

Minutes

-          October 11, 2005 reviewed.  No changes.  Filed and approved.

-            Terri Smith inquired about e-mailing and posting minutes from prior meetings.

Treasurer's Report - John Wisniewski

-          Beautification expenses reached budgeted amount

-          1,164 paid members, state and national dues paid

-          Cash balance at $7,727

-          Fundraiser revenue not yet posted

Officer's Reports - Terri Smith

-          Attended PTA Council of Baltimore County PTA Fall workshop at Kenwood High School on October 11. 

-          Attended two workshops:  (1) ABCs of Leadership and Operations and (2) Reflections, Newsletters and Website

-          Attendance is requirement for awards

President's Report - Deb Kozlowski

-          Next meeting will be held at Damon's at 6:30 on December 6, 2005.  Deb K will send out e-mail.  Respond to Terri Smith tonight if you can or e-mail Deb back.

-          Health and Safety Binder will be at the PTSA sign in table.  Refers to issues such as smoking cessation, substance abuse, depression, etc.  Modeled after very successful high school program.

Committee Reports

-          In House Advertising - Debbie Santos does signs.  Let Deb K know if your committee has any sign needs and she will let Debbie know.

-          Membership - Deb K for Laurie Deitrich

o        1,169 registered members:  68 staff, 1,101 parents and students

o        100% participation (student, 1 parent and teacher) incentive for pizza party deadline extended to November 30

o        Letter to go out to remind parents to join PTSA

o        Suggested table at American Ed Week for parents and grandparents

-          American Education Week - Deb K

o        6th grade (Mon, 11/14),  7th grade (Tues, 11/15), 8th grade (Wed, 11/16) and Grandparents and incoming 5th grade parents (Thurs, 11/18)

o        Still could use donations for Wed and Thursday

-          Nominating - Glenn Kraus will chair

-          Ways and Means - Bonnie Schaffer

o        Fell short of budgeted goal.  Only about $17K profit on $41K revenue

o        Will do a spring fundraiser

o        Still have orders left over.  Will try to distribute to parents during Turkey Trot and then will send home with students.

o        PHHS PTSA Liaison - Jeanne Biemer

o        Honors Concert at the Meyerhoff on November 14 at 7pm.  PHHS had the greatest number of students chosen from any other high school

o        Open House this Thursday @ 6:30

o        Canned Food Drive November 17 - Dec 2

o        Battle of the Bands - 11/18/05

o        Creative Memories Day on December 10 from 9-5 - all day scrapbooking event including lunch.   Contact Amy Gonzales at 410-256-9411 for details.

o        Registration Night is Jan 12 at 6:30

o        SAT, HSA and MSA data to be e-mailed to Deb K for her to distribute

o        Looking for tutors to commit to work with students in AM before school starts.  Pay is $10/hr - knowledge of content area not necessary, training will be provided.  Contact Margie Simon at 410-887-5108

 

-          Toys for Tots - Diana Lewis

o        Starts November 14, ends December 2

o        Boxes placed in office

o        Flyers, posters and morning announcements will be used to promote program

o        New, unwrapped toys.  No stuffed animals

-          Sunshine Committee - Diane Gaither

o        Winter Concerts collection for Bayview Burn Center

 

Principal's Report - Allen Zink

o        6th grade Turkey Trot held today, 95 participated

o        7th and 8th grade Turkey Trot will be held tomorrow

o        Thursday 11/18 is open house for 5th grade parents during AEW

o        Barnes & Noble Night is 11/21.  Times to be verified.  Entertainment provided by PHMS faculty

o        Family Math Night for 6th graders scheduled for 12/1.  May hold 7th and 8th grade nights if participation warrants.

o        Changes in policy regarding after school programs due to control/security/safety of students

o        PHMS has many after school programs.  Sometimes as many a 400 students are after school on a single day.

o        Moderators of program will communicate to parents regarding dates and times of events.

o        Teachers will provide supervision near front of school immediately following program until 4:15.  Students will wait in lobby after 4:15.  If lateness is chronic, parents will be gently reminded of pick up times.

o        Every after school event will require permission slips.  If ongoing, one permission slip with all dates posted will be sufficient

o        Traffic congestion - Mr. Zink will address safety concerns.  Suggestions include employing Officer Gephardt to direct traffic on very heavy after school days, limiting stopping to only right side of driveway, using lower driveway more effectively.

o        Traffic patterns in morning also of concern.  Will consider ideas to make it safer for students

 

Faculty Report - Jackie Nelson

o        6th grade - Ms. Carlineo reported 100% participation in Hobby Fair.  Career Day will be held in Spring.  D.A.R.E. program began on most teams.  Sixth grade led spirit week participation

o        7th grade - Ms. Lake reported wonderful Zoo field trip.  Referred to team  websites.  Grade 7 AEW visitation is 11/15.  Report cards distributed on 11/21.  Light Fantastic Assembly on 1/10.  Report Cards on 2/6.  March is MSA time.  Science Interteam Activity scheduled for 4/20 and 4/21.  April is Oakcrest field trip.  Report cards on 4/25.  Challenge Day is 6/2

o        AAA Spirit Day is 6/2

o        8th grade pool party is 6/2

o        The movie "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" based on the novel of the same name (part of the Narnia series) coming out soon.  Recommended students read the book and then see the movie.

Student Report - Kate Wisniewski and Brandon Hurn

o        Rundown of academic units

o        Canned Food drive under way

o        Door Decorating contest scheduled to begin shortly

o        Schoolhouse Rock Live! is the musical.  Interest meeting held last week.  Auditions to be held 11/16 and 11/17

o        Peer Mediation Training to begin shortly

 

New Business

Faculty Requests

o        The Music department requested final installment of $1,000 for original musical composition to be performed by the 8th grade Leopard Band.  The band will perform at several functions including the MMEA in Virginia.  Motion by Terri Smith to discuss, seconded by Jim Ports.  Discussion followed regarding dedication, the fact that the composer will spend time with music students in all grades about composing process.  Mr.  Zink will follow up question regarding whether music will be made available to both 8th grade bands.  Motion approved, no opposition.

o        Madame Ercolano requested $400 for funding escargot, crepes and some portion of meal for French trip for approx 90 8th grade French students.  Students pay $22.  Motion by Teri Bibeault to discuss, seconded by Eric Bromwell.  Motion approved, with 3 opposed.

o        Character Education committee would like $436.98 to pay for incentives for the program where students nominate other students for outstanding character action.  Money to be used on pencils and stickers and such.  Motion by Terri Sierakowski to discuss, seconded by Kathy Phillips.  Motion approved, no opposition.

o        Math Department requests $500 to offset costs of 6th grade Family Math Night on 12/1.  Motion by Jim Ports to discuss, seconded by Terri Smith.  Money will be used to purchase prizes, including graphing calculator, although no further itemization provided.  Math Dept seeking donations from local businesses.  Motion not approved.  Recommendation to math Dept to provide more detail after event for potential reimbursement.    Suggestion made to establish Math Challenge board and awarding small prizes to students to encourage participation in solving.  Jackie Nelson said this used to be done, but teacher who did it transferred

 

Other New Business

o        Jackie Nelson asked if it should be required that a faculty member making a request for PTSA funding be required to attend meeting to present said request.  Discussion regarding written (or unwritten) guidelines, such as routing through principal (existing) and providing detail of costs and benefits.

o        Fundraiser pick up issues - Bonnie Schaffer will explore ideas to cut down on amount of unclaimed fundraiser items such as phone calls, reminders, marquee postings, publishing pick up date in newsletter, etc.
